sunday obsessions

if you follow my pinterest pages you know i am an avid reader. some may call me an obsessive reader. the only television that i feel is worth watching these days is the big bang theory (which is on while i cook dinner), downton abbey (which actually is an obsession) and the occasional CBC broadcast. so i read. a lot.
even consuming that vast of a number  (@ 11/month), it is rare that i come across a series that is so well written that it leaves you with a constant struggle between devouring every word as fast as possible because you can't get enough of it and putting it down because you know if you continue at such a rate it will be over to soon.

i have found this struggle with the outlander series. Diana Gabaldon is a genius. I tripped upon her when i read the scottish prisoner, which I found out later is actually the 8th or 9th book in the outlander series. it was fabulous. so fabulous i started researching her work and discovered the entire series, and thanks to my favorite librarian, i am just ending the 2nd of the series, dragonfly in amber.

in all fairness, i must set a disclaimer here- that i am in fact in love with all things Scot. (there is truth to the scot's having the saying "swish, swagger, swoon" when it comes to the effect a man in a kilt has on the ladies.) from the highlands to the outer hebrides; let me hear a good scottish brrr and i am undone.
that being said-
what Gabaldon has accomplished in this series is to take you straight to the years leading to the Rising of '45 and back again. the intrigue of the Paris court of Charles Stuart, the warring clans of Scotland and the heartbreaking end of the Highlanders on culloden moor. A masterful storyteller-you can hear the crunch of the heather and the swish of the tartans, feel the burn of the whiskey and smell the sweet earth of the bogs.

If you have even the slightest interest in historical novels, great scottish men of honor or are just looking for an entertaining and intelligent work to pass the cold winter nights-  you owe it to yourself to lock on to this fabulous series.

atleast that is my opinion.

now, if you will excuse me- chapter 38 awaits!

live well.

a lesson in patience; a warm memory on a cold winter day

it started way back (waaaaaay back) when i was a little girl, just old enough to go poking around beaches and picking up bits of this and that and whatever rolled up upon the shores. bottle caps and drift wood, unidentifiable blobs of rust and shards of glass tumbled and rolled to gem like perfection; all stuffed deep into my pockets like bits of buried treasure.  fists full of rocks and  pockets full of sand- i was the renegade sweet pea indiana jones. unlike the fabled indiana, however, i had an elusive treasure. a treasure so simple, yet obviously so plentiful i could not understand why it continued to evade me. i found it had become an obsession- one that has lasted over 30 years. every nook and cranny, every possible stolen second ("oh, i'll be right back, just gonna have a peak") new york, new jersey, through the carolinas, delaware, maryland, hundreds of miles of florida coastline -and that does not include the hundreds of hours logged under the water. yes, that's right.

i have been searching for a shell for over thirty years. but not just any shell-oh no. i wanted a perfect non-clam shell. the ones with the points and the swirls and ridges and peaks, oh yes. a real shell. now. let us not dwell on the fact that, in all of my childhood innocence, i was searching for this shell for the first ten years in (sigh) fresh water inland lakes- that is not important. (silly, yes. important- no) i would let nothing deter me. year after year, visit after visit, i would wake up at the crack of dawn and take to the beaches- mission at hand. imagine my joy, when i finally reached the age of taking those 3 blocks from my great aunts house to the atlantic ocean...by myself. wonder of wonder- joy of joy- no distractions, no interruptions. just endless hours and miles of beaches to comb and search and pilfer. and yet, nothing. and though patience was never one of my greatest virtues, i refused to let disappointment take hold- knowing that one day....

flash forward to this one year. this one day. or, i should say this one night. this one fateful night in october. A storm was brewing off  the atlantic coast of florida- later to be termed, oh so cleverly by the weather people as the *great storm with no name* of 2011.

I should mention at this point that my son, now 19, has inherited the 'call of the sea' from his mother (inherited from her father, and his father and so on)- drawn by the waves and the vastness of it all; its sad song of longing forever whispering in his ear. With a storm on the rise there is no other place you would have found him, other than the darkening shores with his feet in the sand and his eyes on the horizon. that is, no other place until he came running to the house, breathless, to grab my hand and sprint back to the beaches.

carefully we made our way back across the dunes, the sand stinging at our legs and i could see the the waves violently crashing at the shores- the mother in me hesitated as i surveyed our surroundings, wondering if this was in fact a really good idea. but, my son, still invincible, pulled me forward, and pointed. I followed his gaze down the shore line as he yelled above the wild ocean's call..."mom, it's time you found what you've been looking for!"  twinkling in the moonlight, there it was...
a perfect whelk with a left twist.

now, i would like to say that i dropped to my knees over come with tears of joy- a quest consuming 3/4 of my life- finally realized. but you see,
he had friends...

whelks and turkey wings; cowries and coquinas; little slipper shells, jingle shells and fighting conchs. they were all present and accounted for. the ocean offering them up like jewels- we picked for an hour, careful to toss the live critters back to the water-
were it not for the lightening strikes warning us to take heed, we would have been there all night.
The next morning we took our stroll past piles of palm fronds and storm debris down to the dunes but the ocean had taken back the last of her gifts (and most of the beach as well). I guess she figured that offering up 30 years worth of searching in one night was enough, and i couldn't have agreed more.
so i suppose the lesson i have learned is this. when the time is right, the universe will give you what you have been searching for. when the time is right : for the universe and you. all of those years of searching; my son running to find me to share in his treasure trove, to spend time with him digging about a beach, in the dark with the wild winds and the full moon. those moments are fleeting for a parent, if they come at all. yes, i would have to say the universe had it right in waiting. i don't think i would have appreciated it so fully any other way.

live well.
love each other.

Treasures, Blessings and Crazy Bird Love

I came home from work on Friday, just being happy that it was Friday. Small blessing for those with 9 to 5'ers. Happy to turn down the drive, to be welcomed by the tall trees and the mountain greening all around. I took a deep breath as I got out of the car, thinking how blessed I really was. I turned down the walk and stopped with a gasp. The peonies I have been waiting to bloom had burst open in my absence! And this is what was displayed before me! Finally, after weeks of waiting, anticipating and worrying whether the blooms would last the rains- there they were in all of their glory- and I thought to my self- this day can get no better than this. Boy was I wrong!

I walked into the house with the usual "I'm home!" -for anyone that may have been in earshot. Delighted further that my son was home from school/work (and in a good mood- teenagers! lol) He yells from the top floor " Hey mom! You have a package!" A package? I don't remember ordering anything... I wonder what it is. Dropping my parcels on the table, I began my search. You see- my son thinks it is hysterical to hide my packages. He relates it back to my hiding his presents on various holidays, and finds it perfectly acceptable for him to hide anything that comes in the post for me. A treasure hunt, and who can get angry over a treasure hunt? I found the box, acrossed the room, behind the couch, under a pile of art mags. Not so tough. YEAH! It was from Sonia! Dear, crazy, super-friend Sonia! But it was such a big box! what on earth?
I couldn't believe my eyes!! are you ready? wanna see? Look! Look what that amazing woman sent me!
------------------->>>>>

OMG! She is sooooo! cute! Look at that face! And those toes! With nail polish! I can't believe it!

And she is wearing .....
SHOES! HAHAHAHHA!

And vintage jewels!

Isn't she just AWESOME!
Check out those tailfeathers! This little girl has some serious attitude!

Oh- but that is not all!!
One of the things that Sonia and I share- is our demented love for..... rocks. yup. rocks. pick 'em up, put em in your pocket and carry them from state to state to state. The best of the best... heart rocks! They are everywhere, if you just look for them. Little reminders that love is everywhere, in all shapes and forms...Well. I don't have to look very much further! With that sweet crazy bird lady- came an altered box. Another one of my loves. Boxes. They always seem to hold something mysterious, something historical, or just something loved. WELL. Not only is this a very special wooden box, altered with delightful penny knobs and a heart rock (including lock and key)- on no. This is SONIA we are talking about.... it has to have that special touch, that extra, that little thing that makes it ones own.... ready> I'm gonna open the box now....

DUDE! It's PINK with Polka dots and Skulls!!!!

Filled with rose petals no less!
My three favorite things! All in one box!

WOW. Leaping lizards! I am one lucky girl! And I just thought that today was going to be just another Friday. A Friday that was a blessing just because it was that day.
And off I go in a tangent of what special treasures I will put in my heart rock box... maybe my collection of small heart rocks... who knows.. think think think... (what is that noise?)
It seems that in my excitement of my new gifts, I turned my back on the little girl- which - by the way- when she got out of the box, and fluffed her feathers- she announced in a rather loud voice that her name was Lulu Loli- "NOT as in Lolita but as in Lollipop!" can you imagine! Lulu Loli. - alrighty then! Lulu it shall be! but I digress.....

I turned my head, to see a blurrrrr flitting down the stairs.. It seems that I was not the only one to be excited about our new arrivals....

Peckerhead (as the gals at MMMM lovingly refer to him) heard the commotion and flew out of his room- He looks as though he has a crush! Though Lulu was not at all receptive of this new found attention at first.... A little put off as it were- I told Peckerhead to give her some room- to adjust to her new home - but he wouldn't have it!

It took her a while, but she eventually warmed up to him, (not that she had much of a choice- Peckerhead is seriously smitten!)

So I went on about my business of the night: dinner and some light house cleaning - preparing for the evening thunderstorms....

I went back to check on them several hours later...........I think there may be some nesting going on....

Hmmmm. a budding new romance at the Noll! Well - it's about time! HAHAHA!

1000 Beautiful Things

Tia: 1000 Beautiful Things. I hope she is including herself in that 1000.

Words can not give justice to this photographer's work. I found this picture on Creative Souls as her id picture. It was 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. It took about 2 and a half seconds for me to realise that I had to have this piece. When you run across a photographer that is able to capture the essence of the subject's soul, it is a truly beautiful thing.

The photograph that I received was more beautiful and amazing than was depicted in the original advertisement on her Etsy shop. She uses this metallic paper that produces an effect that is reminiscent of the Ambrotype Wet Collodion photography of old, only with a modern twist of warm, deep colors, depth and detail.

I am working on matting and framing my new treasure and will have a photo of the actual piece soon. In the meantime, please take a moment and meander through her gallery, stop by her blog and say hello, and don't bother to try to stop yourself from purchasing one of her prints from her Etsy shop - It is one of those moments you will thank yourself for every time you pass by it, hanging in your sacred space.

It is just temporary

Ok - April Fools - I saved my blogger template to a different computer! AH HA! - so - As a result- everything that i am used to seeing - has gone for a walk for the moment. Perhaps, maybe to visit with you and have a cup of tea?

If you see any of my wayward widgets - could you send them home? they are horribly missed.

Actually, I have finally given in to the fact that I just can't do everything - Well - let me clarify that - I could do everything - it's just that there is not enough time to do everything! LOL - no need to cut myself short here! So as a result I have farmed out the templates, webpage and all of the glorious html coding to a brilliant professional- so that it gets done sometime in the next millennium - As a result - since I already have the design in my head as to what it is going to look like - there is nothing out there that i feel comfortable in - and as a result - (like ya' have not noticed) I keep changing the background every time I sign in - cause - it just doesn't feel like home. (pouting)

Oh well - things could be worse!

I know that time is limited and I have three posts to catch up on (fellow artists to gush over and items to post)- but life seems to throw you for a loop now and again - reminding you to slow down- so instead- this weekend I will be attending a funeral.

I have no regrets. No "wish I should have could have". But as it happens, when things like this happen- it makes you take a step back, take account, and make an extra effort.

See you next week.

wake with a smile

listen to the space between your heart beats

and love each other well

And if you need something to giggle over - check out the size of those bunny feet!

Just a thought.

One thing I have learned over the years - Do not blog when you are suffering from disappointment AND have made the mistake of watching the news.
Bad things happen and rants take on a life of their own. Next thing you know you are on a soap box tall enough to challenge the Empire State Building. And it's very hard to get down.
Rather than head down that road, I'm making a quick left turn and instead am going to leave a short list. I know next to zero (and it becomes more apparent every day) but what I have figured out is this:

-Tomorrow is another day. Remember to take time. there really isn't enough.
-Show those people that are important to you that they are important to you. If for no other reason - be selfish - think of how horrible you will feel if you don't get another chance.
-Pride will get you nowhere. In fact, it may cost you more than you realise.
-You really need to laugh more often. Act silly. Dance. Sing. Do something outrageous.
-Don't be scared - Change. Everything will be OK. Fighting it is futile.
-Everyday, every second brings another set of choices. Take advantage of them.
-Be kind. To those you know - and those you don't.
-Smile. even if you have to fake it to start - you'll mean it in the end.
