Wrapping up the ghoulies -mini e-class-summerfest 2010

I'm Late! sorry bout that folks- one of the draw backs of being in the middle of no where- is that,
your in the middle of no where. and by no where i mean cable arrived some time in the
past two years- and there is no cell service. As a result i am at the whim of mother nature, who
has been, well let us just say- she has been a bit irritable the past few days- either that or
Thor is auditioning for a new band. This activity results in cable (Internet) intermittent for about
5 minutes every 6 to 8 hours.  But we are back up on line- so here is what i
finally wound up doing.
Once i sat back and looked at my ghoulies, i just wasn't happy with their....ghouliness. so i pulled
out my bucket of molding paste and some cheese cloth and decided to
beef up their ghoul level.

once all the icky stuff was dried up and set i mixed up a concoction of raw umber, quin gold,
gesso and flow release and slathered them up.
**oh- BIG mention here- make sure you place your
work in a position you want it to stay in before you use the molding paste- it's like putting it in a body cast
and it's mobility drops to about 23% when its dry**
this particular ghoulie wound up carrying a ghost on its back- i happened to have
some dry pumpkin ghosts *the ghosts of pumpkins past* and some cotton fish net in
the same location- you never really know what is going to come together
when you start~
i still have to seal them- a good coat of varnish should do it- and some gloss on their eyes to make
them shine-
i may even give them bases in the form of rocks and gravestones-  possibilities are endless
when you start working with figures.

every one takes on it's own personality- and if you get stuck, have no fear.
sooner or later they will tell you what they want to ; look like, wear,
do or even say. all you have to do listen to them.

Thank you Juliet! i am glad you enjoyed it!
Kristal-Hey Girl! no worries~gather your supplies! i am going to keep these up for a while- and after that, there will be a direct link on the side, so that you can refer back to them at any time!
Di~ you are the sweetest person on the planet! and i thank you for your kind words. i am speechless at the role model part- i've often been referred to as a bad influence :oP - as for a role model i am honored, and humbled. you are an inspiring work of art yourself- and i am blessed to call you friend.

Have a wonderful week all~ I am in the overwhelmed part of the process here- working to stock a new gallery **the studio is hitting the west coast! formal announcement to come- listen for the squeels of delight*  and trying to stay afloat in the mean time with the rest of you~sometimes the simplest thing we can do to be happy is just smile at the blessings we have~ and i have so many, of which you are included.

live well.

SummerFest- Free E-Class Tutorial- Time to Make the Ghoulies Part One

Welcome to Summerfest at the Studio!
Halloween is around the corner and everyone is working hard to get their muses headed in that direction for the big Halloween sales- so what a better way to kick off Summerfests free E-Classes!
It's time to make the Ghoulies!!

Supplies you will need to complete your project (in no particular order):
 a water spritzer
 aluminum armature wire
 masking tape
 paperclay
 bamboo skewers
 an assortment of clay tools
acrylic paint in your choice of colors
 gesso
fabric scraps (i will be using muslin but old t-shirts work just fine)
aluminum foil
wire cutters

We will start with making the head.
for this part you will need the paperclay (i exclusively use Creative PaperClay), a wad of aluminum foil, your clay tools, masking tape and a bamboo skewer.
i like to recycle aluminum foil (just throw it in the dishwasher and it comes out clean!) but for this demonstration, i will be using fresh from the roll foil- to make it easier.

take your bamboo skewer and gently scrunch the aluminum foil around the top
of the skewer (the flat end, keep the pointy end down).

once you have it in place, your going to give it a good squeeze and
tighten the foil- while molding into a head like form. you want the
skewer to the top of the head form- but not sticking through the top of it.
don't forget to leave a tad at the bottom for the neck.
when you have the foil firmly squished around the skewer, you want to grasp the
foil in your hand and give just barely a tug, (to make sure you can remove the skewer later)
and then move it back into position.
take your masking tape and wrap the head till no foil shows through.
this is done so that the clay does not react with the foil and it aids in the
drying process of the clay- you won't have so many cracks (the foil has lots of crevices for
air to get trapped in)
now make a loose wrap around the bottom (the neck). this will allow you additional space for a neck
and by making it loose, while the clay will push it back against the skewer, it will allow for easy
removal of the skewer later.

cover the head with a layer of paperclay. about 1/4 inch thick.
if it is too thin (i.e you can feel the tape through it) it will have a higher rate
of cracking when drying, if it is too thick it will take days to dry properly.
TIP:: use your spritzer!
spritz the taped head before adding the clay.
spritz your hands while working with the clay.
spritz the clay.
paperclay is very finicky depending on your environment, your body temperature
and the humidity of the room you are in. It is not hard to work with,
and is very forgiving- if you just remember to keep it moist. if it doesn't blend to itself with one
rub of the finger- it's time to give it a spritz. If you think you have given it too much water
just wait a minute and let it set- but don't walk away from paperclay! you will return to a lump
of unusable grit if you do. just keep moving and you'll be fine!

pinch off a bit of clay from your block and give it a spritz, roll it between your
fingers to make a fat teardrop and (give the head a spritz) place it in the center of
the face to create a nose.

you can work both sides of the nose into the head with your thumbs (don't forget to spritz!)
if you don't have clay tools i have found that the end of another skewer, or the back end of a pair of tweezers
works well for making a nose. insert your tool (whatever it may be) to the left and then to the right to create nostrils.
TIP: when creating nostrils, a slight bump upwards before pulling the tool out
helps to create the "flair" of the nostril, with out too much effort. you are pushing the clay up slightly
to "bubble" into a nostril flair.

to make the eyes- first- hold the head, facing up, on the ends of your fingertips
(both hands) place one thumb where the left eye should be, place your other thumb
where the right eye should be, and give a little push- till you indent the clay into
the form of an eye socket.
then, taking the rounded end of your tool, define the eye to a shape you like. again, a popsicle stick
also works well for this part, or the back end of a spoon- look around- you will
be surprised what you can use for clay tools!

here is an example: the left eye has the thumb impression. the right eye
has been defined with the rounded end of a clay tool.

the mouth is simply a split of the clay- i am using a tool in this photo, but
an exacto knife or even a butter knife will work here.
Make sure you are still spritzing your clay! (even the block you are working from
needs a good spritz now and again!)
use two splits on the top, to give the full lip look, and then once you have a bit of an
opening, move below the opening and give the clay a bit of a push in and up
and a bottom lip will appear. you can then define them as you wish.

once you are happy with the basic head and face give it
one more spritz (this slows down the final surface drying)

last step-  smooth under the neck as this is the spot that gets handled the most
and is the most likely spot to get over looked.
give the skewer a twist to make sure it is still loose.
TIP:: Bamboo skewers are great for paper clay.
paperclay dries from the outside in. the bamboo wicks the extra moisture out from the
inside of your piece and is exceptionally helpful when drying hands and feet.
It will take 2 (two) days for the paperclay to dry completely. Do not try to rush it by moving
on to the next step or icky things happen to paperclay that is sealed when there is still
moisture in its core. worst case is mold, best case it's going to crack. in either case,
it is a frustration best left behind.
you can flip the skewer (put the dry end in the piece) after 24 hours- this will
help.
**********************************
it takes a while to master paperclay due to it's squishy need to be wet- but it is well worth the time, and so much fun to work with. the possibilities are endless! and don't worry if you don't have any  or only one or two clay tools to work with. when i started sculpting with paperclay, it took me two years to buy a set of tools and another year to feel comfortable using them. your hands are your own amazing tools when it comes to clay- you will be surprised what you can accomplish with just your thumbs and a bit of household items!
*******************************
let those heads dry and i will see you back here for part two of e-class summerfest at the studio
the body armature!

remember, if you have any questions, you can either leave a comment and i will address
it at next class or you can email me for a private response.

live well.
love each other.

Changes, Challenges, Beginnings and a List

Well, it is officially Spring, and as the buds start popping (and the pollen starts blowing) things are starting to go crazy here at the studio and changes are in the wind. It is inevitable (change, that is) and yet when it happens all at once it can be over-whelming, even when you know it is coming. The first big change you will be noticing, is of course the outline of the blog itself. I have found that there is so much going on, in order for me to make any kind of attempt to keep up and keep organised, I needed to do a complete format change- so over the next several weeks, I will be tweaking and adding tons of new stuff- so keep checking back! I have heard tons of feed back from people about elements that I have to keep because they are so loved - and rest assured - they will stay as they are - just adding a bit more of the fun and informative. And since the business end of things are taking off- I will be listing the business end of things here as well - as my web sight is under construction - and this will the main connection site - for now. As for the other changes, I have decided in order to make it quick and painless, I will keep up with bloglandia's obsession with lists. Numbers, subjects only, no vapid gushing or superfluous detail-straight to the point. I like it.
So here goes:
New assignments, challenges, accomplishments, changes and other various things that have otherwise kept me on the verge and out of sight:
1. Studio overhaul (winter to spring)
2. Teenager with a driving permit
3. Grand package from a long "lost" perfect friend (photo-ey goodness supplied later)
4. Paintings to be published in a book (there are loud screams of delight w/ this one) -update in August
5. Same paintings to go on a continental tour (more screams of delight)

6. Paintings aforementioned- yeah - still have to finish some of them- (I think it's the whole publication pressure)

7. Loss of a family member (a blessing that has ended long suffering)

8. Teenager with a driving permit, hormones and a girlfriend (this one deserves mentioning twice)

9. Starting to teach classes- update June
10. Artfire shop- stocked April
11. Etsy shop overhaul- this week
12. No more frozen pipes (yeah!!)

13. Planting garden this week (double yeah!)

14. Show schedule being finalised (anyone who does this knows this deserves a triple yeah!)
15. 2 months 2 weeks till school lets out -Woo Hoo! (vacation starts)
16. Purchased a dive boat
17. Purchased new dive equipment (it is gonna be a great summer!)

18. Almost done working my butt off at a job that is sucking the life out of me
19. Purchased a bunch of fabulous artwork from three amazing artists- update when received
20. Article written for a grand magazine
21. New laptop - just to make sure I have no down time. LOL
22. New 21 inch flat screen- just cause I'm getting old....NOT :0)
23. Planning a 3 week inter coastal waterway sail, from FL to??? (leaving room for Heather to stow-away)

24. Working on two challenge pieces for two fabulous groups (MMMM and Wendy Froud Sculptors)

25. The Nine Modern Day Muses and a Bodyguard
26. Creative Awakenings
27. Kaleidoscope
28. Art Guilds
29. A wedding
30. A divorce
31. A commission for a cake topper (that should be interesting, I mean, fun- definately a new one!)

32. Altered Bits

Ok - I think that will do for now. I thank all of those wonderful friends and bogging buddies that have phoned and emailed -wondering if I were bound and gagged in a closet somewhere. I appreciate the good thoughts and concern - as you can see I am merely going out of my mind- blazing bravely into my new world- armed with nothing but a stock of clay, a paintbrush and a smile. Hang on- it's going to be a wild ride!

We took a look.
We saw a Nook.
On his head he had a hook.
On his hook he had a book.
On his book was "How to Cook."
We saw him sit and try to cook.
He took a look at the book on the hook.
But a Nook can't read, so a Nook can't cook.
SO...
what good to a Nook is hook cook book?

And now good night.
It is time to sleep.
So we will sleep with our pet Zeep.
Today is gone. Today was fun.
Tomorrow is another one.
Every day, from here to there,
funny things are everywhere.

WIPS for the Weekend

Catching up on dressing a few wips this weekend. I guess they were just tired of being naked :o) In a drying phase now- so its a good time to call it a night. Have a great weekend everyone!

Welcome and Happy 14th~

Greetings and Salutations!

Come on in, have a look around~ and welcome to The Wadsworth~Noll Studio!

We hope that you are enjoying your travels with the blog party! A great big Woo HOO for our hostess!

I will just give you a bit of a background, and then shoosh you out with a hug and best wishes~ and hope to see you again! Please feel free to browse in the gallery or pop on over to The Giggling Goblin at Etsy - I will be updating that shop shortly. Sooner, if the temperature stays above freezing!
I am a mixed media artist with a concentration on my Poppets of Persecution. I have been working with mosaic, acrylic, and re-purposed sculpture for over 20 years, and have been working with clay for the last 10 of those 20. Wadsworth~Noll Studio was created as a dedication to the great women that have gone before me~ Those that have influenced my life, my decisions and are the constant voices in my head :0)

My grandmothers and great aunts: two paternal- two maternal - "Wadsworth" and "Noll". One great aunt is currently still with us, creating and painting in sunny FL at the wonderful age of 92. What a blessed woman!
Don't get m
e wrong~ the men in my life (meaning my father and grandfathers) have had an incredible influence on me as well just in a different way. They have given me the tenacity and courage to stand on my own. Honor and integrity; an infallible support system, and gardening skills!

I love Valentine's Day because the Gerbera Daisies make their appearance! A brilliant display brought to us, usually from our neighbors to the north (these particular Gerberas were grown in Canada!) Yet, unlike the crocus and grape hyacinths - I don't have to wait until the ground thaws for the prospect of Spring. I LOVE Gerberas!! From February thru November~ I can get these babies to bloom and re-bloom. A perpetual inspiration and reminder of what a simple dabble of color can do- how it can just make your whole day POP!

Now- normally- I am not one for cutsie~cuties little bunnies and such~ However, during a recent road trip across the country, I happened to have had a very substantial birthday and to celebrate this very substantial birthday, we happened upon a Cracker Barrel for a very early breakfast. On our way out, this little guy caught my eye - and it was love at first sight...

I'm not sure what attracts me to this little guy - but I just could not imagine not finishing up the travels without him peering through the back window, teasing the passer-bys . I think maybe it was a moment-hare'y (sorry - could not resist) serendipitous situations when we had both fallen down the same rabbit hole; or perhaps I had fallen down and he was clambering to get out..

Either way he has come into the realms of Wadsworth~Noll and has settled in just beautifully, even if I do hear him muttering now and again about the cold weather!

Long day here at the studio~ Last night, though I had several other things to finish (A Wicked challenge for starters~ my bad - sorry guys!) these little guys just kept popping to the surface- wanting to be seen, waiting to be heard - so not there are more U.F.O.'s to work on - and a time slip that is not expanding!

So, in and out on this glorious, yet very brisk, chilly day . Warm your hands by the fire.
Grab a glass of wine, and enjoy your travels!
Best wishes and warmest regards to you all.

Happy travels - and Happy Valentine's Day!

May your day be filled with joyous bits of delight and wonder!

Contemplations of Chance or Is It Friday yet???

Working in the studio is very cathartic. (yeah I know. I am preaching to the choir!) We all know this. But sometimes I just have to sit back and reflect on exactly how cathartic it is. Whether it is writing or painting, sculpting or beading - we all have our outlets in order to preserve our sanity. Sometimes, it just is quite deeper than that. Studio time is a place. It is a person. A friend. It is a living, thriving being all of its own. It listens to the anguish and breeds clarity on the other side. It helps clear the cobwebs and sort through the general day to day b.s. that we are all forced to deal with. It lets us deal with and struggle through, changes in our lives. It laughs and shares joy with us. And it does not mock us when it finds us dancing and singing at the top of our lungs to Momma Mia! (not that I would know anything about that first hand. eh hem) And it helps us heal. For those of you close to me - you know I have been locked in my studio for about a week now - not really speaking, blogging or otherwise. There was a very sudden death in my world. That makes two since the beginning of the year. And being of the old ways - I am wondering who number three will be. And, knowing that it is a circle -to end where we began - I am OK with it - yet, it makes me wonder. What am I not doing, that I want to do. What chances am I not taking? What choices am I not making? Oh - there are a lot of unanswered questions I am contemplating at this moment. Hard what-the-hell-are-you-waiting-for decision making going on here! LOL

And as a result things have morphed a bit. It has helped me get ready for the multiple shop updates - which seem to be headed on schedule - which for me - big shocker! So - for a peek at what has come to life this week: My great-Aunt gave me her sewing machine when I was visiting - HELLO! I love this thing - it weighs around -oh -40 lbs maybe - good ol black cast Singer - lovely as can be - and still sews like a dream - And all these heads keep appearing here and there- you never know when one will show up. Aggie Mae, the goblin girl - just had to have a new dress - she was so upset about her old one - so- first thing- we sat down and made her a new polka dot dress on our "new" machine - She is quite the giggling goblin now! Now all she needs is a new home - as she is up for sale at the Giggling Goblin at Etsy!

Melancholy inspired series of the Poppets of Persecution - are in the works - You know - valentine's day isn't roses and champagne hearts for all of us! And then there is Thorton - He wanted me to mention that you will note the new gallery to the left - of the most honorable blog awards I have received in my absence. (And I must thank Michelle and Cinnibon for the last few recvd' - Really - Thank you girls! You are the sweetest! )

I am off to start on the Vintage Finds to post on Etsy - They are fabulous beads and notions, necklaces and well - just cool stuff to use as embellishments or alter - there are about 100 pieces - so Check my ETSY shop starting this weekend - I will be posting them for sale - Moving onward with the STUDIO CLEAN OUT! - it is good to downsize! Less is MORE!!!
Have a Grand Week! and let's hope for a snow day!!!!

Thorton

I'm not sure where he came from, but then, I'm never sure where they come from. This guy, however, is different, in many ways. He's HUGE! without feet, he is over 28"- and his name is Thorton. That is only unusual for me. Normally, when these creatures start taking shape, they never reveal their names until almost completion. Thorton, however, started announcing himself before his mouth was even dry!

I promised in progress pictures - which as you know is something I never do - Once inside that "zone" things tend to happen quickly - and seldom is there a thought to - oh - I'd better stop and take a picture. But as I have said, Thorton is different. He is teaching me something. I'm not sure what path he will take me on, but we will see.

wondering where his pants are.... for that matter- where are his feet?

So, we will have to see where the weekend goes, and what is in store for Thorton~ or should I say, what is in store for me... hee hee

Lets do the time warp, Agaaaaaaaain!

I 'm not sure why it happens - but I do know that it definitely happens - those times when you have to do sooooo many things and you know you have to get them done - but the studio calls you. Screams at you. So you go. You go to the studio on the pretenses that your only going to spend an hour or two. That's it. Just an hour or two , and then, then you'll go on about with the everyday chores and the to-do list. Promise. You look at your clock. ready. set. go. You bring out the paints and the clay and the wire. And you start. And then someone calls, or knocks~ breaks the "zone" in some way. And you say... What the.... I've been working for like 20 minutes~ I said I'd be back in an hour or two. And they give you THE LOOK. You know the look. It's the wooooooo. is she completely out of her mind? look. Because in actuality. In the reality of it all, the "all" outside the studio that is - hours have passed. 5 to be exact. FIVE HOURS. GONE. not lost. just.....missing. And so, my friends.... that is where I have been. Lost in the time warp, again! and then a step to the right..... I put my hands on my hips, and pulled my knees in tiiiiiight....... ehem. sorry.

<----- Gotta love it

Back to reality.

I have added more items to the Etsy shop. There are more to be added however, it really is a slow go. I guess if I actually sat down at the computer for a few hours - i could get it all done - but between the carpal tunnel, the arthritis and SHEAR BOREDOM - I just can't do it. I've tried. really. I used to work on computers, fix them, keep up on all the latest software, hardware, etc. But then. I'm not sure - I just have no patience. Maybe that was about the same time that I became acquainted with the best IT guy and **poof** no more patience for computers. If it is going to take more than fifteen minutes - it becomes a two or three part session. If I were being honest with myself - I would actually admit it is because..

THIS IS MUCH MORE FUN:

She is such a tease! She is waiting for her hands to be completed and is stubbornly withholding her name until she gets them!

And then there is Thorton.... but he's another WHOLE story... with picturey in progress photo goodness. But - I think I will wait until tomorrow to introduce you to him.

Cheers!

Losin' my mind!

See this... This is me...

Between deadlines and work, it seems as though there is just not enough time to do much of anything else. Every week, I say that things will lighten up - and slow down a bit - but it just doesn't seem to be happening!

I suppose however, looking at things from another perspective would lead me to..... it's better to be busy than bored! I could be sitting here complaining about how none of my work is selling, or I haven't had a commission in months. So - on that happy note - things could be a lot worse in a completely different way! Woo Hoo!
I am truly blessed!

I still have to post to the Etsy shop - but all of my work is either sold or in a shop somewhere else. Once I get a few more pieces completed - TheGigglingGoblin will have inventory - I promise!

There wasn't much going on in the studio this past week. I was suffering from artist block there for a few days - but as of this afternoon - that seems to have been... blown right out of my mind... It is amazing what dissolves an artist block~ and amazing really describes what dissolved mine!

So, it is back to the studio. Ideas flowing, paint flinging , stuff flying about everywhere!!! Better duck!!

Current Quandary or Momentary Dither?

I work backwards. and sideways and even upside down, sometimes. I can't help it. It seems to be the only way I can get things done. For example; when making art dolls, the appropriate way to create an art doll (as suggested by many well established doll artists) is to create the armature, then the head, hands, feet; paint/accent and attach all the pieces; dress the little bugger and then add the hair and final embellishments. (usually explained that the hair gets all funked up and in the way if put on before hand) I can't do it. I am art-doll-challenged (that's PC, by the way- lol) I have to create the head, paint in its features and add the hair first - then everything else - oh and hands and feet are last - usually second last only to dressing - I can not vision a personality unless the head is complete. I fully respect those that can get a full vision of what something is supposed to look like before they even start - but as for me - I just can't do it. Once the personality is established things to tend to flow - but otherwise- I'm just staring at a lump of clay and wire. I am hoping that this is a process that will just take over as I learn more, develop additional technique, etc... but for now - this seems to be working for me - it is just a very odd picture when you walk into the studio and you are exposed to a scene that looks similar to an act of Vlad the Impaler - little finished heads/torsos on sticks everywhere (minus the gore)- Thus is born the next one that just cracks me up (some do that!) She has such a goofy grin and the freckles! - I still have no idea who or what she will become - for now she is happy on her stick in the studio... I will just have to wait and see.

Cheers!

New Dolls

I will be offering a new series of dolls at Ostara* during Musikfest.
